Customer Reviews
Swann and Flanders
This 3 CD set has satire, social and political commentary and catchy music all at its best. One of the recordings unfortunately doesn't have as good sound quality as I would like but the content is hilarious and poignant. There is a wart hog who is shunned by animal society and a cannibal boy who refuses to eat people. The wompom song extolls this imaginary plant with the same gusto that current day herbalists push tea tree extract. There are more wonderful songs than I can describe. I heartily recommend this CD compilation.
Return to Sanity
Before Monty Python, before the Beatles, before "'Enery the Aigth Oi Am" there was the subtle, sweet, insdious humor of Flanders and Swann, and their lyrics remain part of the recognition rituals of Ivy Leaguers of the sixties. For any aging hippies or yuppies who find life WAY more stressful than we ever expected, and for whom the down side of alcohol, sex, and drugs has become apparent, I recommend listening several times to "In the Bath". It raises a cry for peace among the nations by inviting all the leaders to sit congenially steaming in a communal bathtub. And they reminding us of our essential self-interest when they add the proviso "as long as Swann and Flanders get the end without the taps." On those nights when we suspect that there isn't any point to it all, reach for the Flanders and Swann. They won't convince you there is any meaning to life, but they'll make it a lot easier to bear. Don't even try to do without it.
Have Some Madeira
Not every line in Flanders and Swann has become part of our 37-year marriage, but many have. As our turntables fail, we are pleased that we can relive all the fun stuff we used to collect. Nothing is like this duo, especially what you usually hear as French horn by Mozart converted into "I found that horn go(r)ne." And, of course,
"Have some Madeira, m'dear" is an all-time favorite.

Secrets Of Healthy Long Term Weight Loss
I assume that if you are reading the article, most likely you are just curious or (you are overweight - politically correct said) you are fat. Ayah, it's not pleasant to hear that but who we're laying too? You can lay everyone but not yourself...
The recognition that you are fat and the inconvenience that this small but meaningful word causes to you, prove that you are sensitive to your condition, and most likely you would be happy to change it... and change it for good.
But the inconvenience and sensitivity to the word isn't enough to change you condition. There is a harder part of the matter, and it's called practice. Changing of condition, change of your weight and size too, unfortunately could be done only by hard work, the work which has high demands and requires perception and consistence of your part. Here comes in to the picture the willing, your willing and firmness to change ugly reality to look better and slimmer than you are now. Self discipline and your determination are the keys to achieve your weight loss goals. And that is the tricky part since many of dieters fail on that very same reason: resistance to temptation of having more butter cookies, or having another slice of delicious cake or ice-cream ball, will determine if you're going to be the biggest winner or loser.
Losing weight is not easy and I'm sure you know this as well as I do.
It's even hard. It's a fight, it's every day battle that you must (you just owe it to yourself) to win.
But fortunately, weight loss isn't that hard as it sounds to be. All the beginnings are hard, steady workout and demanding diet regimen, with calorie control and choosing right food for well balanced, rich in necessary minerals and vitamins diet, is the "hell" that you as fat man/woman, and as many others that already succeeded, have to go through. And the process has a few simple but necessary steps that you should follow if you already decided and are willing to lose excessive pounds:
1. Discuss your diet plan, diet goals and aimed healthy weight with your professional health provider.
2. Build realistic, achievable plan with reasonable target weight. The ideal one which will help you looks and feels your best.
3. Plan how you are going to handle any setbacks on your weight loss goal.
4. Prepare the support system - weight loss doesn't have to be a solitary effort. Support of family, friends, weight loss groups or even online forums can be great helpful mean to ease on you in your everyday struggle.
5. Prepare yourself for the day after - Even the weight loss is an effort, in the long term it's the easier part of the process of stay fit and preventing from shed pounds to come back. Plan permanent changes that you should implement in eating and exercise habits to control your weight and avoid weight gain.
When you'll go through the whole process and achieve your weight loss goal you will see how your overall health condition will improve too. Obesity, excessive weight, always is accompanied with related cardio and other diseases as high cholesterol, diabetes 2, elevated blood pressure and increased risk of heart disease or stroke. You can prevent them all by weight loss and simple lifestyle changes.
Now you have all the tools that you need to start a better and healthier life.
Life is short, don't make it shorter.

What Constitutes a Wellness Program
Greeting friends!
The topic of wellness programs today is fast becoming a bit of a buzz word. People are looking for better health and vitality and it would seem that wellness programs are the way to go.
As a Naturopath I have worked this way since the beginning. I formulated using one or more of many methods such as nutrition, herbs, lifestyle advice etc to create a step by step way to achieve lasting good health and happiness as the two go closely together.
WHAT CONSTITUTES A WELLNESS PROGRAM?
What a wellness program is not is one of these loads of rubbish you get from a pharmacy designed to aid your weight loss and make them money! Despite some of them being delivered by a "practitioner" they are not wellness programs. They are rubbish designed to make pharmacy owners money!
A wellness program from a Naturopath should encompass your entire being, mind, body, spirit. You should also be assessed on all of these levels properly. That means that when you make an appointment to see your practitioner, you should expect to spend around an hour to an hour and a half with them. A full history will be taken, blood and hair analysis may need to be done or if you come to my clinic, I will use NutriEnergetics System N.E.S. for short, to scan and ascertain your state of being at all levels.
I will also talk to you about what it is you wish to achieve and why. This helps us steer your direction towards your goals and make them achievable. It will also show where you may need to do some self improvement work such as meditation or the like to create a better state of mind or let go of any issue you may be clinging to. Counselling is a normal facet of a wellness program and is a major factor in you attaining great health.
From here we set about undertaking the steps we have planned together to bring you to where you wish to be. Regular appointments need to be made and kept to assure you of steady positive progress and this also helps to detect any changes and allows me to implement or remove and measures needed to insure your best results. These types of wellness programs are mostly sought out and used by people with major health concerns or a history of nagging problems that require stronger approach and monitoring.
Wellness programs are entered into mostly after people have been through the ringer of doctors visits and so and have received little if any resolution of their problems. Few conventional medicine doctors actually care less about such things and most are blinkered to looking at wholistic approaches. This is where conventional medicine fails and naturopathy and the like excels. The whole being is examined and seen as being imbalanced and then those imbalances are identified and corrected restoring balance and thus good health and happiness. this is what a true wellness program seeks to do and indeed should do, anything less is second rate.
AT HOME WELLNESS PROGRAMS
These are ideal for people who are not feeling on top of the world but do not require constant monitoring. Also great for those wanting to lose weight and get healthy and generally change their lifestyle for the better. These are usually administered by a professional still but not always. My advice would be to consult your health professional first and see what they recommend before using anything else.
One such product that I recommend through my clinic that is easily obtainable and safe to use at home is Isagenix, see here http://www.craighitchenstherapies.com/isagenix_client.html. Click the link to read more about it on my main website. It is professionally formulated, uses only top quality ingredients and is formulated by one of the world's best nutritionists. From a professional perspective it is easy to do and simple to adjust if needs be and it produces fast, visible results. This system coupled with further professional lifestyle advice and guidance has seen many of my clients easily attain their goals through self management at home. Highly recommended.
In conclusion a wellness program is aimed at restoring your health to it's optimum levels and helping you attain some degree of lasting happiness as well. It is not just about weight loss or detoxification, they are factor contained within the program, not just what it is all about. it should also educate you about your being and health along the way and at the end of the program, you should feel like you have more knowledge about your health and feel confident in continuing your new way of living. If it leave you with more questions than answers, then it has failed you.
Wellness programs are the way to rectify many problems or to simply perk up a bit, they are very useful and very effective when approached and executed correctly. I highly recommend them for people wanting a lifestyle change, who suffer constant persistent infections, poor immunity, mild depression, anxiety, who are over weight, stressed, sleep poorly or lack vitality in general. I also recommend that you approach a professional for advice first.
I hope this has been of help you.
Warm Regards,
Craig Hitchens. B.HSc.

How To Make Your Own Weight Loss Recipes
If you are overweight or you really care about maintaining your weight rigorously, you need to follow a well-balanced diet chart. To make a well-balanced diet, you should put a little effort on selecting good recipes that assure you not consuming extra calories in your body. In simple terms, weight loss recipes provide you a healthy fat-free cholesterol-free diet. Let us prepare a simple but delicious healthy recipe for your weight less diet. After finishing this article, you will understand that compromising with fat and cholesterol; you need not really compromise with flavor.
Appetizer
Appetizer refers to the selection of food or drink that enhances the appetite by stimulating it. In simple words, appetite is used to enhance your sense of hunger. There are plenty of weight loss recipes suggested by renowned cook and dietitian around the world. Here, we are discussing a simple recipe called crispy potato skins which is 100 percent fat-free and cholesterol-free. To prepare crispy potato skins, you need 2 medium-sized russet potatoes, butter-flavored cooking spray, 1 tbsp crushed fresh rosemary and ¼ tsp freshly ground black pepper. Before you start cooking, you need to preheat the oven at 375°F.
Now you wash these potatoes and prick them using a fork. Place the pierced potatoes in the oven and bake them until the peels become crispy and crunchy. You need to put the potatoes for at least one hour. Now you need to cut the potatoes into halves and scrape out the inside pulp. Leave approximately 1/8 inches pulp with the skins around and keep the pulp for other uses. Now spray the skins with butter-flavored cooking spray. Mix the rosemary and pepper with it and place it to oven once again for another 5 to 10 minutes. It is now ready to serve.
Soup
There is a wide range of weight loss recipes which promise you to feed less fat or less cholesterol, however, pumpkin soup is the one which contains very less amount of cholesterol and a real non-significant amount of fat in it. Here is how to prepare it exclusively for you. To make a one standard soup bowl, you need 1 cup of pure drinking water, 1 finely sliced fresh onion, 1 finely sliced green onion, 1 can of pumpkin puree, 1 cup of vegetable broth, ½ tsp cinnamon, ¼ tsp ground nutmeg, 1 cup of fat-free milk, and 1/8 tsp freshly ground black pepper. Now take a large saucepan and pour ¼ cup of water into it. Mix onion slices in the water and put it to boil until it becomes tender. Be little cautious, drying out of onions is not at all intended. Now add pumpkin puree, vegetable broth, cinnamon, nutmeg and remaining water into the saucepan. Put it in light heat and boil for around 5 minutes. Now add the milk and stir it thoroughly. Cook it to heat. Now garnish it using pepper and green onion and serve it hot. For one serving of this soup, you will get only 1mg of cholesterol and less than 1 gm of total fat. Quite obviously, you can note it down as one of the weight loss recipes.
Meal
Surprisingly, there are so many people around the world who do even fasting so that they can possibly avoid gaining extra fats or cholesterol, but there are so many delicious weight loss recipes around designed with the same purpose. Here is a recipe called broiled white sea bass which is a low-fat low-sodium cooking. You can have it with a bed of sautéed spinach. This is high in vitamin A, iron, calcium, folate, and riboflavin. To make it, you need two White Sea bass fillets of 4 inches each, 1 tsp of minced garlic, 1 tbsp of lemon juice, ¼ tsp salt-free herbed seasoning mix and ground black pepper according to your own preference.
First, you need to preheat the broiler by positioning the rack 4 inches apart from the heat source. Now apply cooking spray on the baking pan and put the fillets into the pan. Then sprinkle the lemon juice on the fillets. Now delicately add garlic, herbed seasoning mix and pepper as well. Broil it for 8 to 10 minutes till it becomes tender and serve hot.
Now, if you take these three weight loss recipes in one of your daily diet, you will consume less than 100mg of cholesterol and less than 5g of fat in total. Isn't it really a weight loss diet?

How YOU Can Control Weight Loss
Interesting Fact: Did you know that your fat tissue REALLY can be burned away.......since it's actually MEANT to be burned?
It's true, and the only reason why fat tissue is being stored on your body is because your body's fat burning hormones are not being released after each meal in the correct amounts.
You Want to Be Slimmer, You're here because you'd like to become slimmer
You are eating the wrong foods, taking on the wrong types of calories per meal and you're also eating meals in the wrong patterns each day, which in itself prevents you from following a control weight loss program.
FOOD is much more powerful than any prescription weight loss pills, because the food that you eat can either make you THIN or FAT. You don't get fat because of a lack of exercising, that's a myth. You get fat because you don't eat the right foods at the right intervals each day.
Also, the pattern that you choose to eat your meals each day is more powerful than any control weight loss program pills. Your body is like an "engine" and it only needs certain foods at certain times of each day, and if you don't eat the right foods at the right times then it won't burn those calories, you will not be able to control weight loss and you'll wind up storing those calories as fat tissue, which is exactly what you are trying to avoid.
You have gotten overweight by eating the wrong foods that much is a fact. And guess what? You can get SLIM by eating the RIGHT FOODS at the RIGHT times of each day.
It's not really any more complicated than that, and the way to start losing weight has nothing to do with starving yourself or jogging you'll be pleased to hear!
There are three (3) real good reasons why various diets have not worked for you, so far
Diets of Low Calorie Foods
You will not lose weight using a Low Calorie Dieting Plan. In fact, eating low calories is probably the worst thing that you can do to your body, since that will only slow down your body's fat burning engine and ruin all chances of losing weight. You can never get slim by starving yourself although some have tried!
Low fat diets do not work
You cannot lose weight using Low Fat Diets. Low fat foods have been popular for more than 15 years, but yet our society is getting more overweight as each year passes. This fact alone should tell you that eating a purely low fat menu is not the answer to losing weight
Why do Low Carb diets make you miserable?
You'll probably find it extremely difficult to get slim using a Low Carb Dieting Plan. Low carb diets have recently become popular over the last couple years, but the problem with low carb menus is that they are too strict and TOO HARD TO FOLLOW for average people. Low carb menus tend to rob your body of too much energy (carbohydrates) and make it nearly impossible to remain on the program for very long. This is why so many dieters find it difficult to follow a strict low carbohydrate menu.
So, What if there was a system of eating that was really very different from anything you've ever seen or tried before, that you'll notice a change in your body in just 11 Days from Today? Would you be Interested?
You cannot get slimmer until you CHANGE your eating habits to something NEW and DIFFERENT, something, which you've never tried before.
If, for example, you choose not to begin using this diet and you keep eating the same meals as you are now, then you'll be stuck with the SAME BODY as you have now. Your body will not change by itself, because you won't wake up one morning and be thinner until you decide to TAKE THAT FIRST STEP and try something new.
For those of you that have a serious weight problem, here is a solution that has already helped many people, however this is only for people who are serious about losing weight once and for all.

The Quick, Easy, Fast Way to Weight Loss
I discovered something easy about weight loss. A quick, easy, and fast way to lose weight. Its simplicity itself. Yet you wonder why more people haven't discovered it. It is simply to find someone who has already lost weight themselves and copy their behavior. Find out how they did it. Then do the same actions to produce the same results. This approach has many advantages. Here are the steps explained in detail.
1. Find Someone Who Has Already Lost Weight.
If you personally know someone that has lost weight it can give you tremendous confidence. Having met a real live person that has lost weight makes it more real. It creates a shift in your mind and a change in your attitude. You start to believe that it is possible. It is this belief, this mind shift, that needs to happen first. If it doesn't you will not take the action you need to. If you do believe it is possible to lose weight you start to take small steps. These small steps lead to bigger and bigger successes.
The Individual who has lost weight acts as a point of reference for you. Seeing is believing. Once your mind accepts that it is possible for you to lose weight 80% of your battle is won. The other 20% is the vehicle , or way , you use to lose it. Vehicles are the diet and exercise methods. However if you think it not possible to lose weight. If the belief is not there. If you have doubts about losing weight. All the diet, food, and exercise programs in the world will not help you because your belief will cause you to sabotage the good actions you are doing.
That's why you need to believe that you can lose weight first. I know you can lose the weight. I did. You can too. Find someone that has already lost weight first. The major battle you have for losing weight happens in your mind. I know it is a battle you can win.
2. Find Out Exactly How He or She Lost Weight.
Never before in the history of man, or woman, has there been so much information available on weight loss. This can be like the proverbial two edged sword. It can be an advantage or disadvantage. It depends on your approach. Find out exactly how the weight was lost. Precisely. Not what appears to be the truth about weight loss. Not what you have heard about it. Find out the precise steps.
Collect information on exercise, diet, and the persons mindset or attitude. This information may take some time to get. It could take some effort. Once you have these facts you are in a great position to take action.
3. Write Out A Weight Loss Action Plan.
This is a simple and important step. If you can't write it down, and explain it easily to someone else, you don't have a plan. A well written plan will give your weight loss program cohesion and direction. It will put the odds of winning on your side. Everyone that has lost weight used a plan. A written plan gives you accountability. If you are not accountable losing weight is nearly impossible.
4. Monitor It Daily.
Daily attention on your food and exercise weight loss program pays. Soon into your program you will be able to look back and say to yourself, " Wow, look what I did to achieve my weight loss." You will say it with a sense of pride. Self confidence comes from achieving goals that are sometimes challenging and difficult.
5. Have Gratitude for What you Can Do.
In the beginning you might find your exercise and weight loss program hard to do. Even frightening. Hey I did. But you know what, even in your first week, you will have successes among your failures. Don't focus on the failures. Focus on your successes and achievements no matter how small. Have gratitude for what you can do. You will notice your ability and application improve. You will lose more and more weight. The pounds will melt away. You will feel fantastic. You will look great. All because your gratitude helped you stick to your weight loss program.
6. Celebrate Your Achievement.
In this age of the rushing hectic lifestyle our celebrations are few. Take time to acknowledge to yourself how special you are. If you acknowledge your own thoughts and acts they will become powerful. Then you will understand that losing weight, having the body and lifestyle that you want, is possible. It is achievable. You will be able to congratulate yourself because you have lost the weight you wanted to lose.

How Fast Can Hoodia Help You Lose Weight?
Possibly there is no one on the face of earth who does not wish to stay physically fit and steady. To be physically fit, the first thing you must need is a balanced system. A balanced system always demands for a good healthy figure without any fat accumulated in it. In today's world, the technological advancement offers us plenty of facilities; however, it puts us in an equal risk as well. Our changing lifestyle, dependency on fast and junk foods, anxiety and stress - all contribute negatively to our health system. The most adverse effect of all these is weight gain. Statistics reveals that Americans are gaining weight faster than anyone else on earth. So it is a high time to look upon exploring different types of weight loss herbs that are effective in managing good health.
Dandelion
Dandelion is considered as one of the most excellent weight loss herbs. It is a good substitute for minerals. It has the ability to take away LDL as well as total cholesterol as well as fatty acids prior getting absorbed into fat cells via bloodstream. It acts as a gentle laxative. It is beneficial for diuretic usage; however, prolonged use of dandelion may result in electrolytic imbalance like any other diuretics.
Licorice Root
This herb is ideal for initial use, however, strictly not recommended for prolonged usage. Initial use is acceptable because of its sugary flavor which satisfies the craving for sweets. But it has side effects associated with it. It influences cardiac condition adversely including muscle pain, potassium depletion, a sense of weakness, etc.
Garcinia cambogia
It is referred to as one of the best weight loss herbs. Till date, no single possible adverse effect of Garcinia cambogia has been reported. It functions as a metabolic stimulant. It helps the body by integrating a slow metabolic action with an increased potential. It is an excellent appetite suppressant, which helps you to have a good control over your food craving.
St. John's wort
Most commonly it can be seen that at the time of stress or acute depression many people increase the amount of their food intake. In other words, emotional stimulants can directly affect dietary condition in some of the cases. It contributes significantly in gaining weight. St. John's wort is useful for treating mood disorder, depression and anxiety. But it should not be taken without consulting any health expert. It is mainly due to its possible adverse effects on health.
Psyllium
It is rich in soluble fiber. Quite obviously, it is a good source for lowering cholesterol level in your body, especially LDL cholesterol. It functions as a great laxative. It is an excellent source of dietary fiber. A wide range of studies actually affirmed it as one of the best weight loss herbs promoting weight loss without any permanent and acute side effects. It offers a sense of fullness with a reduced energy intake. It lowers the chemical responses associated with glucose and insulin digestion and absorption. It regulates the nutrients' time to reach to the intestine and body cells. As a result, your weight gain process will be slower or even you may apparently lose weight as well. Truly there are various weight loss herbs, but psyllium can hold a significant place on the list. It is used to design healthy diets especially for people suffering from overweight and obesity problem.
However, these weight loss herbs are useful for losing weight if and only if you maintain an overall healthy lifestyle. You should follow a regular exercise schedule with a fat-free, cholesterol-free diet. You should not expect any drastic overnight result while you are using these herbs, rather you should understand the value of time and patience. You must also understand the possible side effects associated with each of the herbs. Analyst: Leopard May Help Apple in the Enterprise
Mac OS X Leopard -- the "best upgrade" Apple has ever released, in the words of Steve Jobs -- will be available on October 26, Apple announced Tuesday. Deemed version 10.5, Leopard will go on sale at 6:00 p.m. that day.
In a poke at Microsoft's Windows Vista, Jobs said "everyone gets the 'Ultimate' version, packed with all the new innovative features, for just $129." A five-pack license costs $199.
Apple said Leopard boasts a 64-bit architecture and some 300 new features, including Stacks, a feature for quickly finding files from the desktop; a redesigned Finder that supports sharing files between Macs; Quick Look, which allows users to preview file contents without running an application; Spaces, an application-grouping feature; and Time Machine, an automatic backup feature.
Completion of Leopard was delayed earlier this year when Apple pulled developers off of the operating system to work on the iPhone. OS X 10.5 will be compatible with all Intel-based Macs, G5s, and G4s, running at 867 MHz or faster.
Many New Leopard Features
With Stacks, users can fan groups of desktop files into an "elegant arc." QuickLook provides something quite different than the current generation of thumbnails; it provides "full-screen, high-resolution files of virtually anything, even media files, from any view in the Finder."
Spaces, meanwhile, offers virtual workspace environments where users can set up different desktops for different projects, so that only the files and applications needed are available.
Time Machine provides automatic daily backups. Used in conjunction with QuickLook, users can locate and restore deleted files and previous versions of files.
Other user features include improved parental controls, an official version of Boot Camp, the utility that lets users install Windows on their Macs, and improved versions of iCal, iChat, and Mail.
From a developer's perspective, Leopard is notable as a full 64-bit operating system. "Now the Cocoa application frameworks, as well as graphics, scripting, and the Unix foundations of the Mac, are all 64-bit," Apple said.
Apple also announced Mac OS X Leopard Server, which includes a system for publishing podcasts to iTunes. Server automatically configures client applications, including file sharing, Mail, iChat, iCal, Address Book, and VPN, from user information stored on the server. Leopard Server is priced at $499 for a 10-client edition and $999 for unlimited clients.
Room for Growth in Enterprise
Resistance to Windows Vista in both the enterprise and consumer markets might provide an opening for Apple to gain more traction with Leopard, Greg Sterling, principal analyst at Sterling Market Intelligence, said in a telephone interview.
According to Sterling, Apple has been gaining ground in the enterprise because of the perception that Macs are less susceptible to viruses and because of the ability to run Windows, Sterling said. "The resistance of I.T. departments to Macs has been diminishing and the transition to Intel processors has been a key driver to that," he said. "Frustration with Vista may help them continue that momentum."
Apple actually is proving to be quite cost-competitive in the enterprise, Sterling said. "When you're looking at the higher-end machines, Apple does pretty well at competing with comparable machines from Dell and other vendors."
Apple's iPods have "clearly driven sales of iBooks and iMacs," Sterling said. "I don't think the iPod was intended as a Trojan Horse, but it's had a strong secondary benefit for Apple." Sterling also pointed out that company's "I'm a Mac; I'm a PC" advertising campaign has deepened perceptions that Macs are easier to use and less prone to virus infection.

Phuket gears up for the annual vegetarian festival
The celebration of Phuket Vegetarian festival in the town of Kathu
Celebrated by the Chinese community on the island that's best known for its palm-fringed beaches, stylish resorts and laid-back attitude, the annual Vegetarian Festival showcases Phuket's mystic side.
A combination of vegetarian food, peaceful chants, ear-splitting firecrackers and mind-blowing processions, visitors to the island should make a point of heading into town to see a very different side to the Pearl of the Andaman.
The Vegetarian Festival, which runs from Thursday through October 19, has been an annual event merit-making for more than 150 years.
It is believed to have started in the town of Kathu by a visiting theatre troupe from China. Struck down by a mysterious epidemic, the entertainers decided they had fallen ill because they had failed to pay proper respects to the nine Emperor Gods of Taoism.
As penance they erected Chinese temples and held a vegetarian festival to ward off any residual bad luck. According to local legend, the unorthodox remedy worked and the annual vegetarian festival has been held ever since. Abstention from sex and alcohol were added in later years for absolute purification.
From next Thursday, the whole town will fly the yellow flags to mark the beginning of the spiritual retreat.
On the eve of the festival, a large pole is raised in each temple, and the nine emperor gods are invited to descend from the heavens and take part in the ceremonies. At midnight, nine lanterns are lit and hung on the poles, meaning that the annual Vegetarian Festival has begun.
Food stalls fly yellow little flags to indicate they serve only vegetarian food and devotees dress in white for the entire nine days to show they intend to remain pure. While vegetarian food is tempting and the Chinese shrines are gaily decorated, most visitors focus on the maa song or the mediums the gods enter during the festival.
The maa song manifest supernatural powers and perform self-mutilation so they can absorb evil from other individuals and ensure good luck for the entire community.
Each morning begins with processions through the town. At dawn, one can find scores of young men thronging the inner sanctums of the temples, preparing themselves for self-mutilation.
At the base of the shrines, they go into a trance, begin speaking in tones and don colourful aprons with Taoist symbols, looking on as doctors make cuts at both sides of their mouths.
The festival culminates with a procession of people deep in a trance, piercing their tongues, cheeks and other parts of their anatomy with spears, daggers, sharpened branches and anything else that comes to hand. Possessed by the spirits of nine deities, these ascetic devotees apparently feel no pain and show little sign of real injury.

The Singapore you haven't seen
Hip watering hole is Singapore's answer to its thirsty calls in urban dessert.
'Unique' is this year's word in tourism promotions for the Lion City. You have not yet been there and done it all, writes Sirinya Wattanasukchai
Long hailed as a shopper's paradise, Singapore has decided that shopping alone can no longer bring in the tourists - at least no more than once. The island-state's tourism board is instead now touting "52 Uniquely Singapore Weekends".
The campaign isn't aimed at first-timers who've never seen the Merlion statue or Sentosa Island. It's directed specifically at the been-there-done-that crowd from Bangkok, Chennai, Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Jakarta, Johor Baru and Kuala Lumpur.
These repeat visitors are promised something fresh as they explore Singapore's hideaway corners and attend international stage shows and exhibitions. The city has become, its promoters say, an all-in-one destination with culture, cuisine and a carnival of nightlife, on top of the sightseeing and shopping.
"There are small parts of Singapore that you need to check out," says Catherine Lee, who runs the spa at House on Demsey Road. One of her own favourite spots is the Rochester neighbourhood - and how many foreigners have heard of that?
The culture kicks in in Chinatown and Little India, where dozens of stage performances and exhibitions fill the calendar.
"The government wants us to be less stressed, so they've added more colour to our lives," laughs local tour guide Josephine Oh. Music and art performances like Womad are typical of the new range of shows being brought to the island - more vibrant and more affordable - while free classical-music concerts have been held in the botanical gardens for years.
Meanwhile, for shoppers wearying of the familiar brand names, international brands like Jimmy Choo, Massimo Dutti, Gap and Banana Republic recently landed on Orchard Road.
"We don't want to be an urban dessert," says Quek Swee Kuan of the tourism board. Knowing that visitors still like to see the old charms, rustic quarters like Little India and Chinatown have been revitalised with colourful paint on the buildings.
The Old Hill Street Police Station has become the Ministry of Information, Communications and the Arts. St Joseph Institution is now the Singapore Art Museum. The Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus is Chijmes (pronounced "chimes"), filled with bars, restaurants and shops.
Oh says Singapore was staid for too long, thanks mostly to conservative residents who led frugal lives. Her ethnic Chinese family considered cakes a luxury, and dining at a five-star hotel was out of question.
Not long ago dining out meant either a swank restaurant or a humble food court. "There was nothing like the affordable, hip places for the middle class like we have today," Oh says.
A new generation, raised and educated abroad, has turned the scene around, she says, and foreign foods are everywhere - risotto, foie gras, tapas. The younger crowd parties almost every weekend and needs new hangouts that are both affordable and hip.
That will sound great to most tourists, and so will the traditional kaya toast served at the Ya Kun restaurant with char-grilled, soft-boiled eggs and coffee.
Mark Teo of the Novus Restaurant Bar Cafe says Singapore has always had plenty of hip places, but "hip" does change with the times, and 20 years ago eating at a fast-food joint could be hip enough.
"It was almost impossible to fathom having foie gras with a Chardonnay in a museum just three years ago," says Teo, whose restaurant is in the National Museum.
Other happening outlets include the spacious and green PS Cafe, owned by a clothing chain and pulling in the yuppies and big shots from the marketing and fashion industries.
Apart from selling food, Lee says, you need to be "unique and chic" in terms of decoration and design to survive these days. Like PS Cafe, House is another glass building - converted from old army barracks into a spa, restaurant and cafe, and it maintains the military atmosphere in its utensils and outside structure.
The tourism board's Kuan explains that such building conversion and the emergence of new construction reflect both the modern and the traditional.

Outback odyssey
From spotting penguins and koala bears to picking your own strawberries, Anoma Srisukkasem discovers there's plenty of fun to be had in Australia's rural Victoria
Outback odyssey
Nature lovers enjoy their time to get up close with Australian wildlife
I was famished one recent evening on Australia's Summerland Beach but none of the adorable creatures that resembled waiters in tuxedos were taking any notice of me. All of them were busy waddling and tottering homeward to meet their waiting sweethearts. Each of the returning penguins brayed a particular song known only to his or her partner. I couldn't blame them for the lack of service, and just hoped they would make their way back home safely.
These Little penguins, at an average of 33 centimetres tall the shortest of all 17 species of penguins, waddle ashore at sunset en route to their sand-dune burrows every day. This world-famous penguin parade attracts more than 500,000 travellers each year to Victoria's Phillip Island Nature Park, 90 minutes by car from Melbourne.
Whether you are an ecotourist, agrotourist, shopaholic or adventurer, the march of the penguins is an event you should not miss, but it's just one of several captivating tourism spots in Victoria.
Not far from the penguin parade, nature lovers enjoy visiting the Koala Conservation Centre where they can wander among the bushes and get up close to different species of Australian wildlife - koalas, wallabies, possums, echidnas and snakes.
I was eager and excited to see koalas for the first time in my life, wondering if they would look anything like the koala dolls that cling to the handles of my wardrobe. The fellow reporters I was travelling with had made a game of who would be first to spot a koala.
No surprise to me I, wasn't the first one to see a koala, but I was still as impressed as anyone else in the entourage when they finally showed up. Just a glimpse of one of the 37 cute koalas at the centre can make your heart beat in sync with the sound of wind rustling through eucalyptus leaves.
With their cute looks and habits, even a person who normally doesn't have a soft spot for animals will probably go gooey watching koalas grasping branches on eucalyptus trees. The marsupial herbivore native to Australia has just two activities - sleeping and eating eucalyptus leaves.
Each animal eats about 500 grams of eucalyptus leaves a day and sleeps in the trees for around 16 to 18 hours a day to save energy.
Another special activity not to be missed is catching Australia's oldest steam train on the Puffing Billy Steam Railway. The train is a relic of Victoria's early rail days and one of the finest preserved steam railways in the world.
A ride on the 120-year-old train is a favourite activity for foreign tourists and Aussies both, with passengers ranging from young families to sweethearts, laughing friends to curious teens. The train puffs through the scenic Dandenong Range along a winding, steeply graded narrow-gauge railway.
Those interested in getting out of the city for a while and getting back to nature can try their luck as a farmhand at the Warrook Cattle Farm, learning rural skills like whip-cracking, milking cows, feeding sheep, or watching sheep be sheered of their wool.
A Chinese girl tried squeezing a cow's udder, and found a new gratitude for the gift of milk - a reminder to all of nature's generosity to us humans. I fancied trying my hand as well but had no idea if, deep down, the cow would appreciate such an intimate encounter with a stranger!
For agrotourists, Victoria's Mornington Peninsula, south of Melbourne, is recommended. It's a popular vacation destination with a patchwork of bush, pasture, hills, vineyards and national parks.
Montalto is the location for love - droves of suitors have proposed marriage to their girlfriends amid its romantic 23 acres of lush green vineyards and 1,500 olive trees. I'm sure the charm and splendour of the setting has played a big part in persuading many to say "yes". And how many women, I wonder, have been inspired by the surroundings to turn the tables and propose to their men?
You can enjoy innovative regional delicacies in the vineyard's highly acclaimed restaurant, and taste award-winning wines and olive oil. You can also relax with a lovely gourmet picnic, and stroll through extensive wetlands, watching the bird life and admiring the sculptures.
For strawberry lovers, Sunnyridge Strawberry Farm is an ideal spot. The largest producer of strawberries in Australia, it's famous for its fields where you can pick your own strawberries, cherries and raspberries.
More than 300,000 visitors from around the world come here annually to taste the sweet soft fruits. They also enjoy shopping for the growing range of exclusive strawberry products, including jams, syrups, chocolate-coated freeze-dried strawberries and medal-winning strawberry wines and liqueurs.
Ashcombe Lavender Farm and Ashcombe Maze and Water Gardens are yet another popular tourist attraction. The 25-acre gardens include woodland walks, rock gardens, an exotic forest and waterfalls. The hedge maze here is Australia's oldest and most famous labyrinth - a great place to get lost!
A visit to the rich variety of rural attractions in Victoria state is something you won't forget in a hurry.

The World Film Festival 2007 Bangkok Thailand
The World Film Festival 2007 has teamed up with the EU for this year’s action packed event and the big budget epic “Genghis Khan”, a Mongolian- Japanese co-production, has been selected as the opening film.
Festival director Kriengsak "Victor" Silkakong, said the upcoming festival in October will be one of the most exciting events of the year due to the number of interesting films, special guests and activities.
This will include international and local film directors such as German director Percy Adlon, Taiwanese actress Sylvia Chang, film director Euthana Mukdasanit, plus writer Suchart Sawadsri and the 2007 Seawrite Award winner Montri Sriyong,
Among the high-lights are the Romanian film “4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days” which recently won an award at Cannes; the Taiwanese film “Help Me Eros” by Lee Kang-sheng; the Czech film “I Served the King of England” by Jiri Menzel, a leader in Czech new-wave cinema and “The Man from London” from Hungary, directed by Balar Tarr.
Victor said this year's event will be "more fun and exciting" with activities and programmes supported by sponsors including the French Embassy, the Goethe Institute and the EU in Thailand, “who truly appreciate the value of good films”.
Some 80 films in the festival have been categorised into seven sections: EU films, World Cinema, Asian Contemporary, Documentaries, Short Films, Retrospective and The Tribute.
The EU will present 20 of the best European feature films.
The Retrospective presents the work of Percy Adlon who will present “Baghdad Caf?” and his latest documentary “Orbela’s People”.
The Tribute section is being held in honour of veteran Taiwanese actress, writer and director Sylvia Chang, also known as "Chang Ai-Chi", and will feature her “Dream of Red Chamber” and “20 30 40”. There will be seven documentaries including “4 Elements” from the Netherlands, “Democracy for Sale” by Nation Channel senior producer and director Pipope Panichpak, and “Village People Radio Show” directed by Amir Mohammed and filmed in Pattani province.
A special documentary from MacGillivray Freeman Films, “The Alps” will also be screened. The film presents a majestic view of Switzerland’s natural beauty and follows the true life story of mountaineer and journalist John Harlin III, who sets out on an epic personal journey to “The Alps” that has haunted him since he was nine years old, when his father fell to his death after his rope snapped near the Eiger's summit.
“The Alps” will have its “Asian premiere” at the festival with one special screening only on Oct 26, 2007 at 7pm at the IMAX Paragon Cineplex. It will be on general release in January 2008.
The Short Films section this year features a new section “From Books to Celluloid” with Suchart Sawasdsri, a prominent writer, who returns as a film director with his debut of short films that present a “meaningful silence” in today’s chaotic society.
The 2007 Seawrite award winner Montri Sriyong has agreed to let young film-makers create short films from his poems “Loke Nai Duangta Kapachao” (The World Through My Eyes) in a competition.
14 best short films from the competition will be on screened on MCOT 2 from Dec 1-5, 2007.
Both Suchart and Montri will be speaking at the festival.
The French Embassy continues to support activities to promote film-making among young Thai directors. Two sessions will be held at the festival: “Master Class” will analyse the film “A Nos Amours” by the late French director Maurice Pialat, while the “Cultural Diversity” class will focus on films that present change and hope in different cultures.
“A Moment in June” the first production from the Produire au Sud project held at the WFF two years ago with support from the French Embassy, will be screened. O Natapol, the young Thai director, will present his debut and explain the making of the film.
The WFF will also present an honorary award to director Euthana Mukdasanit, who has been praised for bringing a new spark to the Thai film industry for his use of beauty and reality. One of his films "Peesue Lae Dokmai", which was first released in 1985, won seven national film awards including Best Picture and won best feature at the Hawaii International Film Festival in 1986. The national committee of Thai culture recommends “Peesue Lae Dokmai” as one of the best “100 films that Thai people should watch”.
The film will be screened again at the WFF followed by a discussion with Euthana.
One of the most exciting films in the festival, “Genghis Khan: To the Ends of the Earth and Sea” is a sweeping epic that follows the life and conquests of the great Mongol leader and has been selected for the Opening Night Gala on Oct 25 at Esplanade Cineplex.
“Genghis Khan” is produced by Japanese Kadokawa Productions in collaboration with Mongolian Nyamgavaa Productions to celebrate the 800th jubilee of the foundation of the Great Mongol State. With a budget of $20 million “Genghis Khan” had its world premiere in Mongolia’s capital Ulaan Baatar in April this year, and will have its Southeast Asia premiere at the World Film Festival of Bangkok.
“Genghis Khan” is directed by 69-year-old Japanese director Shinichiro Sawai, and stars Takashi Sorimachi and Korean actress Go Ah-ra. Most of film was shot in Mongolia and features more then 200 Japanese and Mongolian actors.
